Re: Derry City v Shelbourne - Friday 2nd May 2025
The importance of our home games this Friday v Shelbourne, and Monday v St Pats cannot be overstated.
The devil is in the detail, particularly in relation to statistics.
Note, we have already lost 5 games. Over the last 9 seasons, the league champions have lost these many games:
2024: 7
2023: 4
2022: 5
2021: 6
2020: 0
2019: 4
2018: 3
2017: 5
2016: 6
Again, we are already at 5 defeats after 12 games. Currently, Shamrock Rovers have lost 3, Shels 1, Pats 3, Drogheda 2, Galway 2. That's the difference, it's all about the 1% & finite details. This is not me being pedantic, this is purely objective facts.
Historically, a team can suffer ~10 defeats, and qualify for Europe if accompanied with enough wins - however, leaving it to chance should the FAI Cup winners finish outside top 4.
Long story short, we can't keep losing games in the current manner & pace that we are. Hence, these upcoming games against teams we want to challenge is of paramount importance to fulfilling any notion of success this season.

We aren't winning the league this year. No debate.

What did our manager say " I can judge my team after 9 or 10 games". Wonder what his verdict is now. With tough games coming thick and fast don't think there's much more room for error.

We don't look like a team yet. That's my biggest gripe. Lots of people doing their thing but not much cohesion. Lots of fight but not much in quality / composure.brandyball wrote: Tue Apr 29, 2025 11:43 am What did our manager say " I can judge my team after 9 or 10 games". Wonder what his verdict is now. A few positive result will have us back on track but these are not easy to get.

No question about that. However, on paper and with the level of investment, we should be achieving a European spot handsomely, and I would like us to win the cup after last years complete capitulation (I know, very optimistic but let's see).

Well, our next 3 home games are Shels, Pats, Rovers.
In a month we'll have a better understanding of where we stand as a squad.

If you keep taking it on the chin, you'll eventually get knocked out.
Not optimistic about this game at all. Coming up a team that has been together for longer and who are better than last season. Tore us apart in the first game of the season.

2 very tough games in the space of 3 days.
We need points from them, can't afford to lose both of them. I'd be hoping for at least 3pts.

We were comfortably outplayed in the first half of the opening day of the season if not the whole match so you would at least hope for some improvement in that time. It is now some two and a half months later.

We will know where we are after tonight and Monday.
Shels will come to do a job on us.
Big crowd tonight - we need a performance.

Excellent performance. Controlled it from the start. The back five were excellent and a special mention to O'Reilly and Winchester.
Same again on Monday.

Games like that make games like Waterford more baffling. Could have been sitting top of the league by a point.
